As an Invisalign dentist, one of the questions I’m most asked is, “What is Invisalign like to live with? “
For most people, the biggest adjustment isn't the aligners themselves; it's getting used to the routine that comes with wearing them. So, in this guide, we'll follow a typical day in the life of an Invisalign patient, so you can see what they’re really like to wear every day and whether Invisalign is for you. So let’s get into it.
Because Invisalign aligners are designed to be worn for between 20 and 22 hours a day, the morning, for most patients, starts with the removal of those aligners and giving their teeth and aligners a clean.
Aligner cleanliness is important because it removes any plaque, bacteria, and dried saliva that has accumulated on the appliance overnight. It also keeps your aligner smelling fresh.
After removal, you may notice that your mouth feels slightly different. Teeth can feel a little tight or sensitive, particularly during the first few days of a new aligner, but this is perfectly normal and any sensitivity should disappear.
After brushing and cleaning, simply put your aligner back in.
The good news? There isn't much to think about once you've established the habit. What initially feels like an extra step, quickly becomes part of your normal morning routine.
One of the first questions many people have is whether Invisalign aligners are visible to colleagues, classmates or friends.
Invisalign aligners are designed to be discreet, so they're much less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Chances are you’ll notice them yourself more than anyone else does.
Some people experience a slight change in their speech when they first start wearing them. You might find that certain sounds feel different or that you have a slight lisp.
This usually becomes easier with practice as your tongue gets used to the positioning of the aligner. Talking regularly while wearing your aligners helps you get accustomed to how they feel.
Most people will generally be able to carry on with their normal activities.
This is the part that requires the most getting used to. The rules around eating and drinking with Invisalign are simple. It’s advised to remove your aligners every time you eat or drink anything but water.
Ensure that when removing them, you put them somewhere safe, preferably back in the case. After eating, don’t forget to clean your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
Having to remove your aligners before eating can make frequent snacking less convenient than it was before treatment. So if you normally graze throughout the day, you may naturally find yourself eating at more defined times.
Going out for dinner? Meeting friends for coffee? Attending a party?
You can still do all the things you normally do. It’s just that your aligners should be factored into the occasion.
As an example, if you're eating, take them out and keep them safely in their case. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that at the table, excuse yourself to the bathroom and remove them there. When you're finished, clean your teeth if possible and put your aligners back in.
Essentially, for most people, Invisalign aligners don't have to become the focus of your social life, you simply need to work around them.
If you’re a regular gym-goer, you may want to know whether you can work out with Invisalign aligners in place. The good news is that you absolutely can and there's no need to remove them every time you go for a run, visit the gym or play sport.
The only caveat would be when you're playing a contact sport. If this is the case, you may need additional protection, such as a mouthguard.
At the end of the day, you'll brush and floss your teeth, clean your aligners, and put them back in before going to sleep.
Some people find the first few nights strange simply because they're not accustomed to sleeping with something in their mouth. But after a while, you’ll barely notice them.
And because wearing aligners overnight is an important part of reaching your prescribed daily wear time, bedtime is one of the easiest opportunities to keep your treatment on track.
The key things patients need to consider when adopting an Invisalign routine include:
None of these are really deal breakers. They're simply part of adapting to the treatment routine.
Whether Invisalign is worth it depends on your teeth, your treatment goals, and how well the lifestyle fits you.
For someone who wants a discreet way to straighten teeth and is comfortable following a daily routine, Invisalign can be an attractive alternative to traditional braces.
But it's important to go into treatment knowing that the aligners require commitment. Wearing them for the recommended amount of time, looking after them properly, and attending your appointments all contribute to keeping treatment on track.

No. You should remove your aligners before eating. This makes it easier to eat normally and helps protect the aligners. Water is the only drink you should have while wearing them.
You may experience some pressure, tenderness, or mild discomfort, particularly when starting treatment or moving to a new set of aligners. This is generally temporary, but speak to your dental professional if you experience significant or persistent pain.
Not usually. Invisalign aligners are discreet and are generally much less visible than conventional, bracket-and-wire style braces.
Yes. Invisalign is designed to be worn throughout the day and night, so most patients can sleep and exercise normally while wearing their aligners. If you participate in contact sports, ask your dental professional about appropriate mouth protection.
