The holidays are in full swing! A time filled with friends, family, joy and food. Some of the food better for you than others, but we all deserve to treat ourselves occasionally! Savoring desserts and other tasty morsels we only get during specific holiday celebrations is delightful. However, keeping your teeth from being destroyed entirely by sugar is always a good idea. To keep your families happy and satisfied during these merry times, here are some of our favorite lower sugar alternatives.

Chocolate Mousse

You can even make this creamy nutritious treat with avocados, coconut oil, cocoa powder, and almond milk, making it full of healthy fats and low on sugar.

Oatmeal Cookies

Trade in applesauce for the sugar and you’re instantly better off without sacrificing any of the flavor!

Pumpkin Pie

This classic holiday dessert is possibly the healthiest of all the pies. Less sugar is used and pumpkin is a great source of fiber. Win, win!

Apple Tart

Only containing a few ingredients: pastry dough, apple slices, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and unsweetened applesauce, it’s the perfect dish to serve at any get together. Easy to make, low on sugar, yet looks impressive.

Gingerbread

Typically most gingerbread recipes call for much less sugar than other cookies.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Let the sugar be mostly from a natural source, a sweet fruit. Plus, a boost of vitamin C for the day. Subbing dark chocolate for milk chocolate keeps things sweet with less grams of sugar as well.

Sweet Potato Brownies

This takes out the flour and a large amount of sugar associated with most brownie recipes. Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet and also contain iron, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and vitamin D.

Almond Cookies

Nuts in general are always a healthy snack and cookie recipes containing nuts usually call for less sugar.

Remember you can always experiment! Sometimes sugar is simply added for taste and not for a chemical baking reason. A number of recipes can remain scrumptious even after reducing the amount of sugar called for by 15 to 30 percent.
